Pomp Atwood is a part of US Black heritage.
Pompey Atwood was born in 1864. He was the son of Divern (?) Matson.[1] His name was originally Rufus King Atwood, but he later began to go by Pomp. He was born enslaved and was about six at the time that slavery ended. Some of the women in the slave owner's family taught him to read and write.[2]

Pomp died on 23 June 1933 at St John's Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. A resident of Franklin County, he had been retired for about a year from his employment at a coal yard. He was survived by his wife, His mother's name was given as Divan Matson. The informant was Dr R B Atwood of Frankfort County.[1][5] and was buried in 1933 in Hickman City Cemetery in Hickman, Kentucky.[6]
