Biography

John Atherton was born in Northwich, Lancashire, England.

John was a House Painter.

John Atherton (1858-1930) was born in 1858 in Northwich, Cheshire. ^{[1] [2]} He was the son of Samuel Atherton and Alice Kennerley ^{[1] [2]} who lived in Tabley Street, Witton (Northwich) in the 1861 census ^[2] but they moved to the Manchester area before 1871 when they lived on Bentley Street in the Hulme district. John was then still at school ^[3] but became a plumber after he left school. His family moved to Salford before 1881 but John initially remained in Hulme where he, in the 1881 census, was living in lodgings on Russell Square. ^[4]

He married in Salford, later that year, to Charlotte Elizabeth Read. ^[5]

At the time of their marriage both of their families lived in Salford and both had migrated from the same area of South Cheshire.
John and Charlotte started a family in Salford in 1883 with Elizabeth, who was known by her middle name of Alice and all of their children were born in Salford but work took John north to Ramsbottom, Lancashire.

In the 1891 census John, who was working as a painter, & Charlotte were listed on Annie Street, Ramsbottom with one of their children, John Albert. ^[6] Their eldest child, Alice, was staying with her paternal grandparents in Salford and their son William, had died in infancy and had been buried at Emmanuel Church in Holcombe near Ramsbottom. They subsequently had 2 more children, Emily and Samuel, born in Salford, and although Samuel died in infancy in Salford in 1898, he was buried at Emmanuel Church, Holcombe, alongside his brother.
It was likely that John & Charlotte were still living in Ramsbottom at that point but moved back south to Salford before the 1901 census when they were recorded on Port Soderick Street, in the Regent Road area. John was working as a painter and paper hanger. ^[7]
The 1911 census found them living on Milton Place off Broad Street, Salford ^[8] but the moved to Derby Avenue in the Weaste district of Salford before the 1921 census. John was still working as a painter and both his adult daughters were still at home. ^[9]

He lived at Derby Avenue some further years ^[10] until his death on the 11th January 1930. ^{[11] [12]}

He was buried on the 15th January 1930 in Stretford Cemetery. ^[12]
