The son of Mathias Astner (1843-) and Susannah Knauff (1843-), Mathew Astner was born in Omlás, Hungary[1] in 1887, immigrating with his brother, Georg, to the United States, arriving on May 19, 1907. They had sailed out of Bremen, Germany aboard the S.S. Travé, departing Bremen on April 24, 1907 and arriving into the Port of New York on May 8, 1907, with a final destination of Sharon, Pennsylvania.[2] Mathias' siblings included:

  1. Georg Astner (1871-)
  2. Mathias Astner (1872-1875)
  3. Mathias Astner (1878-1880)
  4. Susanna Astner (1890-1968)

In 1910, Mathias lived in South Sharon, Pennsylvania,[3] boarding with Daniel and Sarah Knall and their family while working as a tailor. Mathias married Susanna Pudleiner (1890-1932), the daughter of János Pudleiner and Anna Tomasko, marrying in Cleveland, Ohio on July 13, 1912[4] and having seven known children together:

  1. William George Astner (1913-2008)
  2. Albert Richard Astner (1914-1941)
  3. Evelyn Dorothy Astner (1915-1951)
  4. Edward Astner (1918-1918)
  5. Ruth Astner (1919-1938)
  6. Clarence A. Astner (1921-1952)
  7. Mildred Elizabeth Astner (1930-2012)

Mathew registered for the World War I draft when he was 29, registering in Cleveland, Ohio on June 5, 1917.[1] He stated that he lived at 3438 West 46th Street in Cleveland and that he worked in Cleveland as a tailor. Mathew was described as a short man, of medium build, with brown hair and grey eyes; he did not enlist. He applied for naturalization as a United States citizen, applying in 1915, with his petition being granted on September 12, 1928.[5]

By 1920, Mathew and his family lived in Clinton Township, Missouri, where Mathew worked on his own account as a tailor.[6][7] Widowed in 1932, Mathew lived with his children in Clinton Township, continuing his work at his tailor shop.[8]

Mathew registered for the World War II draft when he was 54, registering in Clinton Township, Missouri on April 16, 1942.[9] He stated that he lived on Route 3 in Clinton Township and that he worked for himself, with his shop located at 113 E. Jefferson Street in Clinton Township. He was described as 5'3" tall and 155 pounds and, having registered in the "old man's draft," did not enlist and remained in Clinton Township.[10] Mathew later remarried, marrying Grace (Humphrey) Astner, residing together in Clinton Township.

Mathew Astner passed away in Clinton Township, Missouri[citation needed] at the age of 78[11] and is buried at Englewood Cemetery there.[12]
