"His parents being in poor circumstances, he was compelled to earn his own living at the early age of seven years. He went from Saratoga County to Chautauqua Co., N. Y., and while living there attended school for one term only. Aside from this, his education was gained by study around the fire-place at night, or at such hours as could be spared from his work during the day. In this manner he mastered the elementary studies of that early period, and in subsequent years was a man well informed upon all the subjects of his time. In 1846, he removed to Freeport, Stephenson Co., 111., his earthly possessions at that time consisting of his wife, three children, a span of horses and wagon, and six hundred dollars in money. He was a farmer, and at the time of his death, March 30, 1889, at the age of nearly 82 years, he was among the wealthy men of his community. On March 1, 1835, he married Lucy, daughter of Ebenezer H. and Rhoda (Sumner) Shumway. She was born May 28, 1813, and died December 29, 1883. Both of them united early with the Baptist Church, with which they remained connected all their lives." [1] He was buried in Hart Cemetery.[2]
