Little is known of May's early life, but she was a devout Baptist with a strict and unyielding sense of behavioural standards and a penchant for speaking her mind without reservation.
As a young woman Maria traveled in Tasmania, after which she stayed in a house situated at 10 Harrington St Hobart, where she was able to rest before returning to Victoria. She was taken with the house name, 'Gwylata', and asked the owners what it meant. They explained that it was an Australian Aboriginal word meaning 'rest after wandering'. She thought this was such a wonderful coincidence that after she married and established her own home she had a beaten copper plate house name made with the same name and attached to the three subsequent homes in which she lived. This was either the home of Solicitor Mr John Mitchell, who lived at 'Gwylata' at 10 Harrington St Hobart [4] or G P Fitzgerald, who lived there in 1890, closer to the date she might have stayed there [5] unless this was a boarding house or block of flats where a number of people lived.
Marriage
Returning to Victoria she married Charles Henderson Croll 3 June 1896 at his home at 20 Percy St Glenferrie, Victoria, Australia. The marriage was officiated by William Clark of the Baptist Church, North Carlton, Victoria, Australia and witnessed by Charles' brother Robert Henderson Croll and sister Mary Henderson Croll[6][7]
Residence
The family lived in the Hawthorn area during the time their two sons and their daughter were born, and in fact the couple and two of their children only ever lived at Hawthorn or in the neighboring suburb of Camberwell.
1941-1949: After the death of her husband Charles in 1938, Maria bought a house at 53 The Boulevard, Hawthorn in the then new Urquhart Estate, where she lived until 1948 when she and her daughter moved into the home of her son-in-law Gordon Grieve at 19 Elmie St Hawthorn. Maria died at this home in 1951 after a short illness.[10] in the Urquhart Estate[Note: at this date she was actually living with her daughter and son-in-law at 19 Elmie St Hawthorn, Victoria, Australia [11]].
