Charles Edwin Ashley was born on October 9, 1874 in Bayou Chene, St. Martin Parish, Louisiana, USA, son of Lewis Charles Brown Ashley (1835–1913) and Mary Bersheim (1848–1928).[1]
Charles (19) married Flavie Antoinette Carlin (17) (born on September 1, 1876 in Bayou Chene; daughter of Dennis Peter Carlin and Amelia (Mendoza) Carlin) on July 23, 1894 in Saint Martinville, St. Martin, Louisiana, United States. Their children were:

- Birdie Ashley (<1901–<1920)

In 1900, E Charles (age 26) lived with his wife of five years, Flavie (age 22) in Ward 2, St. Martin, Louisiana, United States. They were parents of three children, two living with them: daughter, Mandy (age 4) and son, Charles (age 1.) Charles was a day laborer. He owned their farm, free of mortgage. They lived next door to Flavie's married brother and his family on one side, Peter Carlin, and her maternal uncle and his family on the other side, Frank Mendoza.[6]
In 1910, Charley (age 35) lived with his wife lived with his wife of fifteen years, Flavie (age 33) in Ward 2, St. Martin, Louisiana, United States. They were parents of seven children, five living with them: sons, Eves (age 14), Charley (age 11), and James (age 4); and daughters, Amanda (age 13), Birdie (age 9). Charles was a swamper. He owned their farm, free of mortgage.[7]
In 1920, Charles (age 45) lived with his wife, Flavie (age 44) in Ward 2, St. Martin, Louisiana, United States. They children living with them were: sons, Charles (age 21), James (age 14), Frank (age 11), Caroll (age 6); and daughters, Myrtile (age 18), Sarah (age 9), Hazel (age 4). Charles was a self-employed fisherman. He owned their farm, free of mortgage.[8]
In the 1930, census Charley (age 55) lived with his wife of 19 years, Flavia (age 54) in Police Jury Ward 2, St. Martin, Louisiana, United States. Charley was a self-employed logger. Living with them were their sons: Frank (age 21), Caroll (age 16), and Steven Persilver (adopted son) (age 11); and their daughters, Sahra (age 18), Hazel (age 14). Their widowed son-in-law, Joe Daigle (age 38), and his sons Havard (age 15), Jerome (age 11) lived with them.[9]
In 1940, Charles (age 65) lived with his wife, Flavia (age 64) at 179 Old Hwy 90 in Ward Four, St. Mary, Louisiana, United States.They rented their home. Their grandson, Jerome (age 21) and their adopted son, Steven Persilver (age 21), both worked as swampers and lived with them.[10]
Charles (age 70) died on January 29, 1945 in Centerville, St. Mary Parish, Louisiana.[11] Charles was buried in Centerville Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Centerville, St. Mary Parish, Louisiana, United States with a death date of 30 January 1945.[12]
