Biography

Peter Ascroft J.P. was born in Bootle cum Linacre, Lancashire, England.

Peter was a Stonemason.

Peter Ascroft (1847-1917) was born on the 1st Jun 1847 ^[1] in Bootle cum Linacre near Liverpool. ^[2] He was the son of Thomas Ascroft and Margaret Taylor ^[2] and he was christened on the 20th June 1847 at St Mary's church in Walton. ^[1] During his early childhood the family lived on Marsh Lane in Bootle ^[3] but after a few years moved to Litherland Road nearby. ^[4]

He trained as a stonemason and he married Sarah Smith on the 29th May 1870 at St Alban's church, Bevington in Liverpool. ^{[5] [6]}

The couple started married life on Garden Lane, Bootle sharing a household with Sarah's sister ^[12] and it was there that their first child, Margaret Amy, was born later that year. ^[7] The next 3 children were born when they lived at Litherland Road, Bootle in 1873 ^[8] and Waterworks Road, Bootle in 1875 ^[9] and 1876. ^[10]

Around 1877 they moved to Kent Street, Bootle where the family grew further ^[11] and they remained there for 3 years or so ^[13] but moved on to Hawthorn Road North in Bootle before the 1881 census when Peter was described as a mason and builder. In this census his youngest son, named William Alfred, was 1 year old, having been named after an older sibling who died in infancy a few years prior. ^[14] I am not sure what he built but likely houses for the expanding borough of Bootle as he would ultimately own over 150 houses. ^[15]

Before the end of that decade Peter moved his family into Linacre House in the north of Bootle borough off Stanley Road ^[16] and they were recorded there in the 1891 census. ^[17] They would remain here for 2 decades. ^{[18] [19] [20] [21]}

He was active locally, was a Justice of the Peace and would serve as an alderman on the local council for some years, and served as Mayor for the 1900-1901 year. ^[22]

Around 1910 he moved to Breeze Hill, Bootle ^[23] and was recorded there in the 1911 census when only 3 of his children were still living with him. ^[24] In 1914 he managed a trip to Canada and the USA. ^[25]

He died at the Breeze Hill address on the 1st May 1917 ^{[26] [27] [28]}
