Biography

Salvatore Arrigo is born in 1844 in Termini Imerese, the child of unknown parents. He is raised by Vincenzo Arrigo and his wife, Angela Comella. In Salvatore's death record, his mother is named as Angela Longo.

A birth announcement from the city government of Termini Imerese appears in the 1877 marriage allegati of Salvatore Arrigo when he marries for the second time.

Donna Marianna Giovenco, age 40 (b. 1804), the spinner of the wheel where foundlings are left at a hospital (ospedaliera rotaia), reports that on 14 July 1844 a baby named Salvatore Arrigo was left in the wheel.[1]

There is a second official announcement of his birth, on the back of which there is some explanation for how he got his name. He was given to Angela Arrigo, wife of Vincenzo, to be nursed, on the day of his discovery in the wheel. They live in the San Antoninello quarter of Termini.[2]

Salvatore marries three times, first to Giuseppa Pusateri in 1862.

Salvadore Arrigo, libero, age 18 (b. 1844), native resident of Termini, contadino, of unknown parents, and Cosimo Pusateri, age 22 (b. 1840), contadino, resident of Termini, son of Matteo, procuratore for Giuseppa Maria Pusateri, nubile, age 18 (b. 1844), native resident of Termini, daughter of Matteo Pusateri, contadino, and Maria Arrigo, both residents of Termini, agree to the marriage of the minor of unknown parents and the sister of Cosimo Pusateri, on 16 September 1862 in Termini.[3]

Salvatore and Giuseppa have at least five children: Vincenzo (1863), Angela (1867), a stillborn girl in 1871, and two boys named Matteo (1873 and 1876).

On 29 December 1863, Salvadore Arrigo, age 24 (b. 1839), contadino, reports the birth of a baby boy to Giuseppa Maria Pusateri, his wife, age 20 (b. 1843), in their home in Termini that day. He is named Vincenzo Arrigo.[4]

On 21 December 1867 in Termini, Antonina Pusateri in Giurdina del fu Cosimo, age 58 (b. 1809), reports the birth on 11 December of a baby to Giuseppa Pusateri di Matteo, age 25 (b. 1842), wife of Salvadore Arrigo d’ignoti, age 25 (b. 1842), contadino, in their home in Termini in the quartiere Madonna Bella. The baby is a girl and is named Angela Arrigo.[5]

On 2 September 1871 in Termini, Salvatore Arrigo di Vincenzo, age 27 (b. 1844), contadino, reports the birth of a girl to his wife, Giuseppa Pusateri di Matteo, age 27 (b. 1844), in their home in Termini in the quartiere Sant’Agata, who is born without life.[6]

On 3 October 1873 in Termini, Salvatora Pusateri in Campagna, age 50 (b. 1823), reports the birth on 2 October of a baby to Giuseppa Pusateri di Matteo, age 28 (b. 1845), wife of Salvatore Arrigo, age 30 (b. 1843), d’ignoti, in their home in Termini. The baby is a boy and is named Matteo Arrigo.[7] The first boy named Matteo is presumed to have died in infancy.

It appears that around this time, Salvatore first emigrates to the United States. He owns fruit stands in Louisville and Cynthiana, Kentucky, in 1876.[8]

On 23 September 1876 in Termini, Salvatora Pusateri, age 56 (b. 1820), contadina, reports the birth on 20 September of a baby to Giuseppa Pusateri, age 32 (b. 1844), contadina, wife of Salvatore Arrigo, age 32 (b. 1844), contadino, in their home at vico Messineo, #19, in Termini. The baby is a boy and is named Matteo Arrigo.[9]

Giuseppa dies a year later.

On 31 August 1877, Vincenzo Mantia, age 50 (b. 1827), muratore (bricklayer/mason), and Vincenzo Mercurio, 50 (b. 1827), porter, report the death that day in via Madonna bella, #19, of Giuseppa Pusateri, age 30 (b. 1847), contadina (countrywoman), native resident of Termini, daughter of Matteo Pusateri, contadino, and the late Maria Arrigo, and wife of Salvatore Arrigo. A copy of this record is made 23 November 1877.[10]

Salvatore remarries in December to Anna Maria Gentile.

On 7 December 1877, Salvatore Arrigo, widower, age 33 (b. 1844), contadino, native resident of Termini, of unknown parents; and Anna Maria Gentile, nubile, age 23 (b. 1854), cucitrice (seamstress), native resident of Termini; daughter of the late Leonardo Gentile and the living Maria Teresa Pusateri; announce their marriage in the civil record of Termini Imerese, where all parties are resident.[11]

Salvatore and Anna Maria have at least thirteen children, six living in 1900. Their known children are Leonardo (1878), Pietro (1880), Theresa (c. 1882), Giuseppa (1889), Charles (c. 1894), and Josephine (c. 1897).

On 21 December 1878 in Termini, Teresa Pusateri, age 56 (b. 1821), filatrice (spinner/weaver), reports the birth on 19 December of a baby to Anna Maria Gentile, age 24 (b. 1854), contadina, wife of Salvatore Arrigo, age 34 (b. 1844), contadino, in their home in Termini. The baby is a boy and is named Leonardo Arrigo.[12][13] He is named after his maternal grandfather.

On 30 June 1880, Teresa Pusateri, age 56 (b. 1824), filatrice, reports the birth of a baby to Anna Maria Gentile, age 26 (b. 1854), contadina, wife of Salvatore Arrigo, age 35 (b. 1845), contadino, in their home in vico Mro. Alessi, #15, Termini Imerese. The child is a boy and is named Pietro Arrigo. Witnesses are Andrea Mercurio and Leonardo Longo, both age 50 (b. 1830), both porters.[14]

According to testimony from Mr. Frank Phillips, who rents farmland to Salvatore around 1882, Salvatore enters the United States around 1880 and arrives in Washington DC around 1882. Salvatore opens a store on Pennsylvania Av between 2nd and 3rd Streets, but it is not successful. He then approaches Mr. Phillips, a DC barber, with an offer to sharecrop on land Phillips owns in Forestville, Prince George’s County, Maryland, on the Marlboro road. Salvatore and his family are truck farmers, bringing produce to the Center market in Washington DC three or four times a week.[15]

Theresa is born in September 1882, according to the 1900 census; she was born in Termini Imerese, according to her marriage license.[16] Her birth announcement has not been found in the civil birth indices for the years 1881-1885.

On 7 October 1885, police arrest five Italians for passing counterfeit silver coins. Four are taken from the Center market, early in the morning: Salvatore Arrigo, a middle-aged Italian, Matteo Pistello, Josephine Arrigo, Matteo’s wife, and Anna Maria Gentile, also called Giovanna and Geneva, who is Salvatore Arrigo's wife. Giovanna has a six-month old child. Salvatore's son, Vincenzo Arrigo is arrested while out peddling lemons from a basket. Another counterfeiter, Giuseppe Busapetta, is also charged with possession and passing counterfeit money.[15][17][18][19][20]

Angela marries Vincenzo Sanzone on 14 May 1888 in Hamilton County, Ohio.[21]

On 1 June 1889 in Termini Imerese, Margherita Re, age 66 (b. 1823), housewife, reports the birth on 29 May 1889 of a baby to Anna Gentile, age 35 (b. 1854), housewife, wife of Salvatore Arrigo, age 45 (b 1845), contadino, in their home at via Giuliano, #18, in Termini. The baby is a girl and is named Giuseppa Maria Arrigo.[22] Because Salvatore and Anna Maria have another daughter named Josephine around 1897 in Ohio, it is presumed that this child named Giuseppa dies in early childhood. She appears on the Plata with her parents and siblings in 1889.

In the course of a postal police investigation, Inspector Oldfield learns from the Italian consulate that Arrigo has a criminal record in Sicily, where he was a customs officer.[8]

These passengers appear sequentially on the SS Plata in Sep/Oct 1889. All on this page are from Italy and bound for New York.

227. Salvatore Arrigo, 45 (b. 1844), laborer

228. Anna Maria Gentile, 35 (b. 1854)[23]

Josephine is born in December 1897, according to the 1900 census, and in 1895 in Cincinnati, according to her marriage license.[26]

Charles is born in 1896 in Cincinnati, according to the record of his death.[27]

Theresa marries Antonio Matacia, who is also from Termini, on 8 January 1899 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Theresa Arrigo is 17 (b. 1881), lives on Vine St., Cincinnati, born in Termini Imerese, daughter of Salvatore Arrigo and Mary Gentile. Not previously married.[16] Note: Theresa appears with her parents as an unmarried daughter in the 1900 census.

In the 1900 federal census of Cincinnati, OH, taken 6 June:

At 1008 Vine St., Salvatore Arrigo, born in April 1844, age 56, married for 23 years (m. 1877), heads a household with his wife Maria, born in March 1855, age 45. She has had thirteen children, six living. At home are Peter, born in June 1881, age 19; Theresa, born in September 1882, age 18; Charles, born in October 1894, age 5; and Josephine, born in December 1897, age 2. Salvatore, Maria, and Peter were born in Italy. Salvatore emigrated in 1880 and is naturalized. He is a fruit dealer working on his own account, as is his son Peter. Maria and Peter emigrated in 1881.[28]

Anna Maria Gentile dies sometime between 1900 and 1909. In 1910, Salvatore is in prison and tells the census taker that he is on his third marriage.

In 1902, Leonard Arrigo and Augustina Lasita apply for a marriage license in Cincinnati. According to the record on file in the probate court of Hamilton County, the marriage is not completed. Leonard Arrigo, age 23 (b. 1879), living at 12th St. Hamilton County, Ohio, born in Italy, a fruit dealer, son of Salvatore Arrigo and Maria Gentelea, previously married, and Augustino Lasita, 21 (b. 1881), lives at 12th St., daughter of Mariano Lasita and Ignatia Lomandier, not previously married, apply for marriage license no. 240 on 1 April 1902. Leonard was previously married in England by Ban, it says along the side of the page.[13]

Leonardo Arrigo, age 29 (b. 1879), born in Italy, a widower, a fruit dealer, the son of Charles Arrigo and Anna Gentile, marries Frances Lasita, age 24 (b. 1884), born in Italy, single, daughter of Nicholas Lasita and Ignatia Lamantier, on 2 December 1908 in Hamilton, Ohio. They both report their residence is at 500 Clinton St. Sworn 27 November 1908. Wed 2 December.[29] No other records have been found which call Salvatore "Charles."

By 1908, Salvatore Arrigo is the leader of The Society of the Banana, an extortion ring which uses Black Hand letters send through the post. Arrigo's connections to fruit dealers across Ohio and Pennsylvania, to Buffalo, New York, make up the backbone of the Society.[30]

Leadership passes to Salvatore Lima by 1909. In March, a meeting of the Society is held in Marion, which Salvatore Arrigo and his son, Vincenzo, attend. Salvatore is in his sixties and uses a cane. In Cincinnati, Salvatore Arrigo receives his invitation at 1637 Hughes St.[8]

A postal police investigation leads to the arrests of Arrigo and eighteen of his associates, on charges of conspiracy to use the mails to extort.[31]

In August, Salvatore is captured on a farm near Goshen, Ohio.[32]

A Bertillon card for Arrigo says he is 5’6”, age 65 (b. 1844), born in Sicily. Stout build, bad teeth, iron gray hair. All of his various bodily measurements are recorded. The bottom of the card says “Measured at Toledo Ohio” December 20, 1909.

Salvatore Lima, of Marion, Ohio, is sentenced to sixteen years. Two of his brothers-in-law get ten years each. Salvatore Arrigo of Cincinnati is sentenced to four years in federal prison. His son, Vincenzo Arrigo, gets a new trial.[31]

In the 1910 federal census of the US Penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas, taken 9 May:

67. Salvatore Arrigo, Prisoner, 66 (b. 1844), married for the third time, for 22 years (m. 1878). Born in Italy of Italian parents. Emigrated in 1877. Naturalized citizen. Kitchen labor in the prison.[33]

In May 1912, an article by Arthur Train appears in McClure’s Magazine: Imported Crime: The Story of the Camorra in America. It is “Illustrated with photographs.” The picture on the first page is a full-body photo of Salvatore Arrigo.

Josephine marries Russell De Salvo, a teamster, on 19 November 1913. Josephine Arrigo is 17 on 15 April 1913 (b. 1895), lives at 1117 Race St, Cincinnati, born in Cincinnati, daughter of Salvatore Arrigo and Maria Gentile, not previously married.[26]

Salvatore marries Domenica Longo Campagna, a widow, and long-time resident of Cincinnati. Her daughter lives next door in 1920.

This is the first record in which Salvatore's wife is not Maria:
