Nick was born[1] Nicolo' Arrigo on 12 September 1871 in Termini Imerese, the son of Girolamo Arrigo and Maria Coniglio.
On 13 September 1871, Girolamo Arrigo fu Santo, age 37 (b. 1834), contadino, resident of Termini, reports the birth of a son on 12 September 1871 to Maria Coniglio fu Nicolo’, age 27 (b. 1844), in their home in quartiere Gancio. The boy is named Nicolo’ Arrigo. A copy of this birth registration is made 28 December 1897 and is included in the allegati for his 1898 marriage to Maria Azzarello fu Antonino in Termini.[2]
Nick had one half sister alive at the time he was born, Caterina, from his father's previous marriage. Records from Termini Imerese also exist for two other children, Dorotea and Santo, from that first marriage, but it is unclear if they were alive or residing in Termini Imerese at the time of Nick's birth. Nick also had two older full siblings, Santo and Antonina. Santo later settles in Lincoln, NE with Nick and raises his own family, while Antonina never marries and dies in Termini Imerese. Nick has four younger brothers who live to adulthood. Agostino is born when Nick is two on 24 Oct 1873, Giuseppe is born when Nick is four on 4 Feb 1876, Salvatore is born when Nick is six on 13 Jan 1878, and Antonino is born when Nick is ten on 2 Feb 1882.
According to his declaration in 1898 on the manifest of the Fulda,[3] Nick is in Lincoln, Nebraska from 1892-1897. This matches the immigration year of 1892 that "Tony Argo" gives in the 1900 census.[4]
Nick marries twice, first to Maria Azzarello on 5 February 1898 in Termini.[5][6]
In Termini Imerese on 2 January 1898, Nicolo’ Arrigo, bachelor, contadino, of the age of majority, native resident of Termini, son of Girolamo, contadino, and Maria Coniglio, both residents of Termini; and Maria Azzarello, virgin, of the age of minority, native resident of Termini, daughter of the late Antonino Azzarello and of the living Antonina Graziano, a resident of Termini; have published the banns required for marriage, and no opposition has been found to their union, on 5 February 1898.
On the SS Fulda sailing from Naples on 11 March 1898 and arriving in the port of New York on 23 March, these passengers appear together on the manifest.[3] They are from Termini and all but one are going to Lincoln, Nebraska:
23: Bartolomeo Azzarella, 12 (b. 1886), was previously in the US in Chicago 1893-97. Joining Nick Arrigo.
24. Nicolo’ Arrigo, 26, (b. 1872) married, was previously in the US in Lincoln 1892-97. Joining his brother Agostino Arrigo at O Street.

Nicholas Arrigo and Santo Arrigo, both fruit dealers living at 1315 O, are listed in the 1899 Lincoln, NE city directory.[7] Nicholas sells fruit at 1303 O and Santo at 11th. on the southeast corner of P.
Nick and Maria have four known children, all born in Nebraska: Girolamo/James N./Jim (1899), Maria/Mary (1902), Antonina/Lena (c. 1904), and Antonino/Tony (1906).
James N. Arrigo is born 22 July 1899, according to his Find A Grave profile.[8] In a 1907 manifest, he is called Girolamo. It is traditional for the first born son to be named after his paternal grandfather. By the same tradition, their second son Anthony James is named after his maternal grandfather. Similarly, their first daughter Mary is named after her paternal grandmother and their second daughter Antonina/Lena is named after her maternal grandmother.
In the 1900 Lincoln City Directory[9] Gus Arrigo, Santo Arrigo, and Tony Arrigo all list their residence as 1315 O St, which Nicholas lists as his place of business. They are all in the fruit business, with Gus operating on O St. on the southeast corner of 13th St. and Tony at 123 S. 13th St.
A 1900 census record[4] that is not a match for any other known person, appears to be Nick and his family. His given birth month and year are a month off his actual birthdate. The birth information given for "Magalina" is likewise a month and a year off from her actual birthdate in April 1879. Jim's month and year of birth are a match for the information on his FindAGrave profile.
In the 1900 federal census[4] of the city of Lincoln, Lancaster, NE, taken 1 June, Tony Argo heads a household at 1315 O St. He was born in October 1871 and is 28 years old. His wife, Magalina (Maddalena?) was born in May 1878 and is 22. At home are their son Jim, born in July 1899, ten months old, and cousins Gus, born in May 1886, age 14, and Joe, born in December 1887, age 12. Tony was born in Italy and everyone else in the household was born in Nebraska of Italian parents (except Jim, whose mother is from NE). Tony is a fruit dealer working on his own account. He immigrated in 1892.
Mary is born 6 February 1902, according to a biography on Find a Grave.[10]
In 1904, Nick's brother, Antonino, and some of their relatives sail from Naples to Boston on the Romanic, intending to join Nick and other family members in Lincoln.[11]
Nick's first wife, Maria (or Mary) dies of typhoid fever in Lincoln, NE, in 1906.[12][13][14]
On the SS Canopic, sailing from Naples on 30 October 1907 and arriving in Boston on 11 November:[15]

Four years after their mother's death, three of Nick's children return from Italy escorted by their uncles and aunt. His oldest son is not on this manifest.
