Biography

Jefferson Arnold served in the United States Civil War.
Side: CSA

Jefferson Arnold was born in May 1839 in Wayne County, Tennessee, United States, son of Reuben Arnold (~1795–>1880) and Sarah Stroud (~1804–<1880).[1][2]

He was conscripted for Civil War service for the Confederacy in Izard County, Arkansas. He served in the Ark. 27th Confederate Infantry with S. C. Turnbo who kept a diary of his experience.[3]

He married Rebecca J. Knight in about 1863 in Izard County, Arkansas, United States. They separated after the children were grown. Their children were:

  1. Joseph William Arnold (1864–1950) .
  2. James Alexander 'Alec' Arnold (1867–1927) .
  3. John M Arnold (1869–1957) .
  4. Sarah Jane Arnold (~1871–1951) .
  5. Martha A Arnold (1876–>1902) .
  6. Robert Lee Arnold (1879–1945)[4]

In 1901, his nephew, a physician, certified that Jeff was going blind from chronic conjunctivitis which was causing ulcerations of the cornea.[5]

He died 24 Oct 1907 in Baxter County. He and Rebecca are buried at Moody Cemetery at Iuka in Baxter County, Arkansas.[6][7]

Research Notes

On p. 34 of Silas Turnbo's book on the Ark. 27th, he describes the execution of an Arnold for going AWOL. He gives the name Jeff Arnold for the person executed. This is incorrect. Jeff Arnold died of natural causes in 1907. His brother, William, was the person executed.

LaMyra Morton matched to SML at 38 cM on 3 segments and LM at 44 cM on 3 segments. Both are 3C1R to LaMyra Morton through MRCA Reuben Arnold/Sarah Stroud, but also are descendants of Reuben's brother, Thomas.

Numerous matches to descendants of Jeff and Rebecca's children have been noted by WT contributor Morton-7125, whose mother and aunt, great-granddaughters, were also DNA tested. At this point, matches between descendants of all their children have been made.Morton-7125 16:08, 21 July 2021 (UTC)
