Biography

"Mathey" Matthew T Arnold was born in May of 1829 in Tennessee to Jefferson Arnold and his first wife.

He married Nancy about 1850 and they had four children, Sarah, Mary, Julia and George.

He married Jane Arnold in 1873. They were the parents of Nancy, Newt, Matthew, William and Minnie. According to family, Jane was his first cousin, the daughter of Reuben Arnold.[1][2] They had a farm in Iuka near the Moody Cemetery.[3][4][5]

Mathey died the day after Christmas in 1915.[6] His grave was either not marked at the time of death or disappeared with time, but an obituary states he was buried at Moody Cemetery[7] with other family members. The current marker at the cemetery was placed in recent years and based on census information.[8]

Notes

There is misinformation being passed around the internet that this Matthew Arnold married Sarah Lindey. This is based on a 1890 marriage record in Crittenden County, Arkansas for an African-American couple from Alabama. If you examine the census records, absolutely nothing about this couple matches the information for Mathey and Jane Arnold of Baxter/Izard Co., Arkansas who were white, came from Wayne County, Tennessee and began having children in 1874.
