Biography

Robert John Armstrong was born on 23 April 1871 in Carlisle, Cumberland^[1].

In the 1901 England Census Robert is Boarding within the household of Mary Maria Piper (Edwards) Armstrong (1861-1957) at 1 Shield Row, Brewhouse, Beamish. Robert is said to be 29 years old and employed as a Coalminer banksman working above ground^[2].

In the 1911 England Census Robert remains a boarder within the household of Mrs Mary Symons at 12 Gordon Terrace, West Stanley. He is said to be 39 years old and a Colliery Banksman working above ground^[3].

Robert goes onto marry Mary Maria Piper (Edwards) Armstrong (1861-1957) who he has resided with for around 20 years and known as the Widow Mrs Mary Symons. The couple were married before 30 September 1920 in Carlisle, Cumberland^[4].

In the 1939 England Register Robert remains employed as a Colliery Banksman and resides with his wife Mary at 37 Church Street, Stanley, Durham^[5].

Robert died on 1 September 1950 in Durham aged 79 years^[6] and was laid to rest in Stanley Old Cemetery^[7].
