Biography

Robert Armstrong was born in Ireland.

Robert Alexander Armstrong (1887-1936) was born in County Cavan, Ireland in 1887. He was the son of John Armstrong and his wife Katherine.

His mother remarried to John Nixon after the death of her husband and in 1901 the family lived on Gwendoline Street, Toxteth Park in Liverpool. ^[1] By 1911 Robert had left school and was a grocer's shop assistant. ^[2]

He served in the Royal Garrison Artillery in WW1 joining up in late 1915 at which time he still lived in Gwendoline Street and was then a clothier's assistant. He gave his mother Katherine Nixon as his next of kin but following his wedding in 1916 to Charlotte Stoll he changed the next of kin details to her. ^{[3] [4]}

They married at St Philemon's church in Toxteth Park on the 3rd December 1916. ^{[5] [6]}

They moved into Rosebery Street in Toxteth Park and in 1921 Robert was shown as an unemployed dock labourer whilst Charlotte was a shop assistant at Blackler's department store. They had no children. ^[7] They remained at the address for the next 15 years ^[8] but work was irregular and hard to come by leading to Robert becoming depressed.

He committed suicide by ingesting poison on the 15th July 1936 ^[9] and following an inquest on the 15th July,

he was buried on the 18th July 1936 in Toxteth Park Cemetery. ^{[10] [11]}
