Edith Armstrong was born in Creighton, Knox County, Nebraska,[1] on 12 Aug of 1884, to William H Armstrong and his wife Nora Armstrong.[2] The 1885 Nebraska state census taker dated the visit to the Armstrong family 12 June 1885, and Edith is listed as six months old.[3][4] Her father, William H Armstrong, was born in Illinois, and her mother, Nora, was born in Wisconsin.[5][6] Edith's parents moved from Nebraska to San Diego, California, in 1885, when Edith was a baby.[7]
The family as represented on the 1900 US Federal Census for San Diego, shows her father an orchard laborer and he is the only one out of the parents and seven children who is employed.[8] When Edith Armstrong was about seventeen years old, in 1901, her parents moved their family to Portland, Oregon.[9]
Edith is found with her parents on the 1910 Census in Portland, Oregon, age 25, working at the Post Office.[10] Her father William is a shingler, her sister, Edna Armstrong, age 28, is a teacher. [11] Edith's brother Leland J, age 19, and her brother Edwin T, and her mother Nora, are not employed. [12]
Edward S Evans married Edith Armstrong in Portland, Oregon on 17 Sep 1912. It was the first marriage for them both, and they both worked as postal clerks.[13][14]
In the 1920 Census, Edward S. Evans, age 45, is a clerk at the post office; at home with his wife Edith A. Evans, age 35, and their son Donald Evans, age 6 years.[15]
In the 1930 Census, Edward is still a clerk at the post office, and he is living with his wife Edith and their sixteen year old son Donald on Madison St. in Portland.[16] Edith is teaching school for disabled children.[17]
Ten years later, in 1940, The US Federal Census shows Edward S Evans, age 65, and his wife Edith A Evans, age 55, are living on 49th near Madison in Portland, where they were living five years before also.[18] Neither are employed.[19]
In the US Federal Census for 1950, Edward S Evans, age 75, and his wife Edith A, age 65, are still living on S E 49th St. in Portland, Oregon.[20]
