Catherine Armstrong was born about 1797 in County Fermanagh, Ireland, [1] daughter of Robert Barton Armstrong (~1750–~1840) and Isabella Sarah Nethery (~1750–~1826).

Catherine married James Martin (born about April, 1799 in County Fermanagh). Their children were:

James passed away about 1841 en route to Australia onboard the immigrant ship ‘Manlius’. This ship had many cases of ‘plague’ or typhoid and James succumbed to his illness and was buried at sea. The Manlius arrived in Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne Victoria on 16th February 1842 and was subsequently put under quarantine, with the surviving members of his family onboard. Catherine and five sons - Joseph, James, Robert, Christopher, and Morris Irvine Martin. There is another baby son Andrew who is not listed in the log but is thought to have also died on the voyage. Catherine arrived on the ship Manlius on 16 February 1842 in Port Phillip Bay, Australia having departed from Greenock[2][3]

Catherine was a passenger with four children, arriving in Port Jackson on Mar 2, 1843 from Port Phillip aboard the Perserverance[4]

Catherine remarried in 1847 in New South Wales. She married Andrew Stewart. [5] [6]

Catherine died on January 12, 1877 in Shell Harbour, Colony of New South Wales, aged about 79. [7] She was known as "Granny Martin" and was one of the oldest residents of Shellharbour. She was the sister of Mr. Armstrong of Gerringong, and Mrs. McClelland of the Foxground, and mother of Mr. R. Martin, Mr. J. Martin and Mr. E. Martin. [8]

Catherine was buried at Shellharbour Old Cemetery. [9]
