George W Armstrong was born about 1833 in Giles County, Virginia. He moved to Ohio around 1857.[1][2]

George married 1) Nancy Ann McFarland on 11 Aug 1859 at Gallia County, Ohio.[3] In 1860 and 1870, they lived in Springfield Township, Gallia County, Ohio. Among their children are:[4][5]

  • Mary "Mamie", m. 1) Mr. Alexander and 2) Leo E. Williams in Hamilton, Ohio[7];
  • Edward, b. 23 Dec 1869; m. Mary Allen; d. 02 Feb 1936[8]

George served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was a private in Company F of the 44th Regiment of the US Colored Infantry. He enlisted on 15 Mar 1865 and was discharged on 14 Mar 1866 at the expiration of his term of service.[2][1] He filed for an invalid pension in 1887 and his widow filed for a pension on 31 Dec 1898. Both were granted.[9]

George married 2) Mrs. Frances (Ellison) Harris on 15 Oct 1873 at Gallia, Ohio.[10] She brought 2 children into the household: Mary Harris and Martha Harris. In 1880, their blended family lived in Springfield Township, Gallia County, Ohio.[11]

George passed away in Springfield Township, Gallia County, Ohio, on 1 Dec 1898[12][1]

Research Notes

  • George was not identified in the 1850 census in Giles County, Virginia, searching Ancestry on 15 May 2024. It's possible he lived somewhere else or that he was enslaved during that time period.
  • George's household in the 1860 census includes a 65 year old Delilah Armstrong and an 18 year old Hannah Armstrong who may be relatives.[4]
