Archer was a soldier during the American Civil War.[1][2] He served with Company K, 55th Regiment, Massachusetts Infantry (Colored).[1][3][2] Prior to the war he was a farmer in Frankfort, Ohio.[1][3][2] On his enlistment record, he was described as twenty-three years of age, standing 5' 5" tall with a brown complexion, hazel eyes, and black hair.[2] He was born in North Carolina and his occupation was farmer.[2] He enlisted 16 June 1863 at Readville, Massachusetts for a period of three years and was mustered into service with his unit on 22 June 1863.[2] He wished for any letters to be directed to Mrs. Nancy Revels, Smoky Row, Chillicothe, Ohio.[2] He was detailed as a fifer on 21 May 1864 and returned to the ranks 1 April 1865.[2]
