Biography

"MRS. JOHN P. PLEASANTS of Baltimore was Anne Cleves Armistead, daughter of William" Armistead of "Hesse," and his wife Maria Carter, daughter of Charles Carter of "Cleves" and Anne Byrd of "Westover." Born November 7, 1773. Married March 14, 1793. Copied from her tombstone: "The amiable wife of John P. Pleasants of Baltimore, died at the house of her kind friend and brother-in-law Capt. Thomas T. Byrd on June 17, 1801, in the 28th year of her age."[1]

"After her burial and before returning to Baltimore, her husband upon riding to the Old Chapel planted the willow switch he used as a whip. It took root and formed the great willow that now shades her grave."[1]
