Robert Armfield is Notable.
Lt. Col. Robert Armfield served in the United States Civil War. Enlisted: 1861 Mustered out: Jan 17, 1862 Side: CSA Regiment(s): Company B, 38th Regiment;
Assigned to the 38th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry during the Civil War and was a 1st Lt. with Company B (men of Yadkin County) at Camp Mangum near Raleigh, North Carolina on January 17, 1982. [2]
He took command of the Regiment during the Battle of Mechanicsville, on June 25, 1862, when the commander, Colonel Hoke, was wounded. The unit took on heavy firing from the Union army, and suffered great loss that day: 152 of 420 men were killed or wounded. [3] Two days later at the Battle of Gaine's Mill, then a Lt. Colonel, was ill and command was assumed by Major L.D. Andrews.
In September of 1862, he took command again at Shepherdstown and was wounded. He was furloughed and returned home, where he was elected to solicitor. He resigned his position in the army in December of 1862. [4]
He died in 1898, [5]and is interred at Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville, North Carolina.[6]
