CENSUS INFORMATION: In the 1861 UK Census of Redruth, he is recorded as Francis L Argall, a scholar aged 9, born in Illogan. He is living at home in Illogan Downs with his parents and 8 siblings. (RG9/1582, Folio 110, page 38). In the 1880 US Census. he is listed as Francis Argall, a Miner aged 27, and born in England. He is living with his mother and two brothers (John and Henry) in Guadaloup village, Almaden, Santa Clara, California. (Supervisors District No. 1, Enumeration District 255, Page 34). In the 1900 US Census, he is listed as Dr F L Argall, a Dentist aged 47 and born August 1852 in England. He is living with his wife, 5 sons, 2 daughters and 2 servants, in 9th Avenue, San Jose township, Santa Clara, California. (Supervisors District 21, Enumeration District 71, Sheet 11A). In the 1910 US Census of San JoseTownship, Santa Clara County, California, he is listed as F L Argall, a Dentist aged 57, born in England. He is living at 202 South Ninth Street, with his wife, two daughters and six sons. He immigrated in 1881 and has been married for 21 years. (Supervisors District 5, Enumeration District 100, Sheet 7A). In the 1920 US Census, he is listed as Francis L Argall, a Dentist in General Practice and aged 67. He is living with his wife, 5 sons and a daughter in 9th Street, Precinct 31 in San Jose City, California. He immigrated in 1867 and was naturalized in 1872. (Supervisors District 7, Enumeration District 173, Sheet 2B). In the 1930 US Census, he is listed as aged 77, of no profession, and living with his wife, Eleanor and son Donald in 202 South Ninth, San Jose City, Santa Clara County, California. (Supervisors District 10, Enumeration District 43-54, Sheet 1B). In the 1940 US Census, he is listed as Francis Argall, a retired dentist, aged 86 and born in England. He is lodging (with others) in Dane Street, Berkeley, Alameda, California. (Supervisors District 6, Enumeration District 1-101, Sheet 4A).

GENERAL NOTES: BIRTH: Birth is registered in GRO indexes for the Redruth Registration District in the September quarter of 1851, under reference 9.254.

BAPTISM: Although christening is believed to be recorded at St Agnes, the recorded home is shown as Illogan. (However, I cannot now find the proof).

MIGRATION: Emigrated to the United States with his family around 1867.

Between 1872-73 was a member of The Miners and Mechanics Benevolent Association in Port Oram, New Jersey (Member #088).

DEATH: He died at 94 Church Street, Santa Cruz, CA, on 1 September 1945. His cause of death was Gen. Arteriosclerosis and Cerebral Haemorrage.

CREMATION: He was cremated on 5 Sep 1945 at Santa Cruz Crematorium.

OBITUARY: From the "Riptide" paper, Santa Cruz, California on Friday, September 7th 1945. LAST RITES HELD FOR Dr. ARGALL. Dr Frank L Argall, 93, who practised dentistry in San Jose for more than 50 years, died here Saturday afternoon, a few hours before his son, Marsden, noted baritone and opera star, was slated to sing the leading role in "The Mikado," in the civic auditorium here. But death did not halt Argall from giving a splendid performance of the Gilbert & Sullivan operetta. "The show must go on," regardless. Dr Argall was well known for many years in musical circles in Santa Cruz where he took part in many concerts. He posessed a beautiful tenor voice. In fact the entire Argall family were good singers and their home life was truly a musical one in San Jose. Dr Argall was the father of Marsden, Frank, Charles, Claude, Clarence, and of Mrs R T Ford. Funeral services were held in the chapel of the Wessendorf Mortuary Wednesday afternoon with interrment in the Santa Cruz crematory.

Dr. Frank L. Argall Dr. Frank L. Argall was born in Cornwall, England, thirty-six years ago this August (1888); came to the United States in 1869, and to California in 1874 living meantime in New Jersey. Dr. Argall came immediately to San Jose, and, after attending school two years at the University of the Pacific, went into the office of Dr. J. N. Prather, to study dentistry. In 1883 he opened a dental office, and has since been engaged in active practice by himself. About three years ago Dr. William J. Younger, of San Francisco, mad a very important discovery in the science of dentistry by demonstrating the feasibility of the transplantation of teeth. It consists of boring out or preparing the cavity from which a tooth has been extracted a decayed tooth, or from which a tooth has been lost by any means, and inserting a healthy tooth, on which the pericementum, or membranous covering, has not been destroyed. When the work is properly done, even though the tooth transplanted may have been extracted months or even years before, a health union at once begins to take place with the organs of the alveolar cavity, and in a few months the tooth becomes as solid and firmly attached as the natural teeth which have never been disturbed. Some of these transplanted teeth put in by Dr. Younger have been used over twelve years, and are a perfect success. Within the past year Dr. Argall has given special attention to this valuable new feature in dentistry, and has performed several operations in transplanting teeth. A few months since he extracted the superior left lateral incisor tooth, which was too badly decayed to be filled, from the mouth of a young man, and in its place implanted the corresponding tooth extracted from a lady's mouth nearly three months before. Nature began to form the union, and in a short time the implanted tooth was nearly as firm as his others. This wonderful discovery in dental science demonstrates the tenacity of life possessed by the peridental membrane environing the teeth. Dr. Argall also performs all classes of professional dental work according to the most advanced methods of the science, among which is building new crowns on healthy roots. Dr. Argall is the fifth of eight living brothers, two of whom are in Australia, and the rest in this country. His mother resides in San Jose. Dr. Argall was married June 27, 1888, to Miss Ella M. Bent, of San Jose.
