Endowment
The William Laird Archibald Scholarship [18] of $1160 was endowed by Dr. Francis M. Archibald (Acadia, '19) in honour of his father, Dr. W.L. Archibald. The annual award was intended to be made each year to a male student of high standing entering his third undergraduate year in Arts or Science; or it may, at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee, be awarded as an entrance scholarship to an exceptionally bright and needy student.
Adventure
After William retired in June 1939, he got in a car with his wife, Margaret, and drove west, in the days before there were highway routes crossing the continent. His notes[15] indicate he visited friends and former students in Ottawa, North Bay, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Calgary, Vancouver, Victoria, Astoria, Oregon, Palo Alto CA, San Francisco World's Fair, Oakland CA, Los Angeles, Pasadena, Whittier, Long Beach, Redlands, Santa Ana, Tijuana Mexico, High Bank CA, Phoenix AZ, Grand Canyon, New Orleans, Tuscaloosa, Birmingham AL, Atlanta, Elizabeth NJ, and the World's Fair in New York.
Afterward they moved to Tampa, St.Petersberg [19], and Daytona Beach, Florida. Then they moved in with his brother Judson at Penney Farms.[20][15]
