Biography

William Laird Archibald was born January 26, 1870, the son of Eliakim and Cynthia Bradshaw Archibald[1] [2]

On September 12, 1897, he married Margaret Miller Freeman, in Milton Nova Scotia[3], and they had children, including[4] [5] [6]:

  1. Francis Magoun Archibald, born in 1899[7][4] [5]
  2. Helen Bradshaw Archibald, born in 1902[8] [5] [6]
  3. Harold Freeman Archibald, born in 1906[9] [5]
  4. Jeanne Margaret Archibald, born in 1913[10] [6]

William died at Penney Farms, Florida on April 15, 1966[1] [11], and is buried in Shady Rest Cemetery, Holly Hill, Volusia County, Florida[12]

Endowment

The William Laird Archibald Scholarship [18] of $1160 was endowed by Dr. Francis M. Archibald (Acadia, '19) in honour of his father, Dr. W.L. Archibald. The annual award was intended to be made each year to a male student of high standing entering his third undergraduate year in Arts or Science; or it may, at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee, be awarded as an entrance scholarship to an exceptionally bright and needy student.

Adventure

After William retired in June 1939, he got in a car with his wife, Margaret, and drove west, in the days before there were highway routes crossing the continent. His notes[15] indicate he visited friends and former students in Ottawa, North Bay, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Calgary, Vancouver, Victoria, Astoria, Oregon, Palo Alto CA, San Francisco World's Fair, Oakland CA, Los Angeles, Pasadena, Whittier, Long Beach, Redlands, Santa Ana, Tijuana Mexico, High Bank CA, Phoenix AZ, Grand Canyon, New Orleans, Tuscaloosa, Birmingham AL, Atlanta, Elizabeth NJ, and the World's Fair in New York.

Afterward they moved to Tampa, St.Petersberg [19], and Daytona Beach, Florida. Then they moved in with his brother Judson at Penney Farms.[20] [15]
