George Archer BA MB BCh was born in Ireland.

George Johnstone Stoney Archer was born on 15 November 1874[1]. He was the younger son of George Thompson Archer and Mary Anne Elizabeth Stoney.

Sadly his only brother William died on 18 April 1875 at the age of 7. Three days later, his father George died on 21 April 1875 on board the s.s. Hydaspes.

George received his degree in medicine 1897 from the University of Dublin.

He was with the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was promoted Lieutenant on 27 July 1898 (London Gazette).

George married Ethel Mary Beauchamp on 4 September 1899 in St. Stephen's Church in Dublin, Ireland[2]. His address at the time was 4 Longfield Terrace, North Circular Road. Notice of their marriage was printed on page 1 of the Dublin Daily Nation dated 7 September 1899:

MARRIAGES.
ARCHER and BEAUCHAMP—September 4, 1899, at St. Stephen's Church, Dublin, by the Rev Canon Carmichael. LL D. assisted by the Rev Canon Walsh. D, Rector of the Parish, G J Stoney Archer. Esq. R A M C, to Ethel Mary, youngest daughter of Robert H Beauchamp Esq J P. of 25 Fitzwilliam square, Dublin.[3]

Together they went on to have four children.

Lieutenant-Colonel George Johnston Stoney Archer, B.A., M.B., B.Ch., B.A.O. served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the Boer War and World War One. During the Boer War he served with the 5th and 7th Stationary Hospital. He was promoted to Captain on 27 July 1901 (London Gazette) and he was promoted to Major on 27 April 1910 (London Gazette).

He disembarked in France on 19 August 1914. George was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel on 2 March 1915 (London Gazette).

He was entitled to the Queen’s South Africa Medal (clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal), the King's South Africa Medal (clasps South Africa 1901 and 1902), the 1914 Star, The British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

George was placed on the ill-health list on 23 December 1920 and he retired on 25 October 1921 due to his illness contracted while on service (London Gazette).

In May of 1923, he applied for the Soldier Wound Badge and it was refused him. This badge was given to soldiers who received wounds or illness during the war.

His mother Mary died on 11 March 1924 at about age 78.

On 3 January 1929 he left South Hampton, United Kingdom with his wife on the ship Johan de Wit bound for Batavia, Java. He is listed as a Lieutenant-Colonel (still). They came back to United Kingdom at the end of the month. He also bought a piece of land in Gloucestershire in the same year.

In the 1939 England and Wales Register, George J S Archer (b. 15 Nov 1874) was recorded living with his wife Ethel M Archer (b. 6 Mar 1880) at 107 Old Bath Road, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. Also in the household were five other individuals.

George Johnstone Stoney Archer died on 5 November 1955 at the age of 80 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire leaving £27,293[4].
