James was born in 1886. He was the son of William Arbuthnot and Nettie Bittinger. ^[1]

He lived with his parents and siblings in Bergen, New Jersey, United States.

James married Jennie Cargill (daughter of Wiley Cargill and Mary Susan Killian) circa 1909 in Illinois, United States.

They had three children.

US Census Event Date 1910: Recorded in the household of his parents in law (along with his wife Jennie) in Springfield Ward 2, Sangamon, Illinois, United States. Aged 25.

He was drafted into the 1st World War.

US Census Event Date 1930: Living with his wife and three children in Springfield, Sangamon, Illinois, United States. Aged 44.

His wife died in 1942 and his son James Jr. in 1957.

James Sr. died in 1977 at the age of about 91.^[2]
