James Arbuthnot of Dens was born in about 1741. According to Arbuthnot (1920), James was the only surviving son of Thomas Arbuthnot and Jean Arbuthnot.

He was a prosperous merchant of Peterhead who purchased Arbuthnot House, Peterhead during 1768 from Robert Arbuthnot of Haddo-Rattray. During 1786 he bought the Haddo-Rattray estate from Alexander Farquharson, an accountant of Edinburgh. James was also an extensive Whale, Salmon and Herring fishing proprietor.
Marriage
On 21 February 1775, he married Catherine Cumine. Her father was George Cumine of Pitully Castle (now a ruin), near Fraserburgh. (Her sister Barbara, married Alexander Annand of Haddo-Rattray.)

His wife Catherine died in 1787.
He died in 1823 at the age of 81.

born 23rd Aug 1741 died 19th March 1823
aged 82 years.
This tablet has been erected by George, William and Robert Arbuthnot sons and brothers of the deceased as a mark of their affection to them while living and from respect to the memory of parents and a brother so deservedly dear to them.
