George Washington Antoine[1] was a Black physician in Texas who served as an army doctor in the 370th Infantry Regiment of 93rd Division during World War I. [2][3]

African-American Doctors of World War I

George Antoine, son of Lee Antoine and Maria Coleman[4], was born on November 26, 1878 in Chenango, Brazoria County, Texas, according to his death certificate[5].

He first married Lottie Voliver[6], then after her passing, married Zelma Newman. He died of a heart attack on August 17, 1939, at the age of 60, and was buried in Paradise Cemetery in Houston[7].

  • he attended Guadalupe College prior to attending Meharry
  • his rank in the US Army was 1st Lieutenant
  • he practiced medicine in Houston for more than 20 years
  • he was on staff at Houston Negro Hospital (renamed Riverside General Hospital)
  • he was a member of the Lone Star State Medical, Dental, and Pharmaceutical Association and became the organization's 1st Vice-President
