Thomas William Anson, 1st Earl of Lichfield was born on 20 October 1795. He was baptised at Colwich, Staffordshire, England. He was the son of Thomas Anson, 1st Viscount Anson and Lady Anne Margaret Coke. He married Louisa Catherine Philips, daughter of Nathaniel Philips, on 11 February 1819.
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England, and then went to Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.
He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Yarmouth between June 1818 and July 1818.2
He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baron Soberton, of Soberton, co. Southampton [U.K., 1806] on 31 July 1818, and on the same date he succeeded to the title of 2nd Viscount Anson, of Shugborough and Orgrave, co. Stafford [U.K., 1806].
He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1830.
He was created 1st Earl of Lichfield, co. Stafford [U.K.] on 15 September 1831.
He held the office of Postmaster-General between 1835 and 1841, when the penny-post was introduced, and he held the office of High Steward of Yarmouth between 1836 and 1854.
He died on 18 March 1854 at age 58.
