Biography

William Anglem was baptised on 17 September 1804 at Saint Michael's in Limerick city, son of James Anglem and Mary Roberts.[1] He received a Roman Catholic education.[2]

According to Joss family legend, James Joass arrived to New Zealand with the Captain as a first mate,[3] probably no earlier than 1823. By 1829 Captain Anglem was master of Bunn & Co's whaler Caroline, also servicing their base at Preservation Inlet, and transferred to the command of the Weller brothers' Joseph Weller in 1834.[2] In July that year he 'enticed' Otago leader Karetai (grandson of Ihupupu[4]) onboard the Lucy Ann and set sail for Sydney, taking them as hostages[5] to prevent an attack on the station from Taiaroa's warriors.[2]

Anglem married Te Anau in Sydney, where their second daughter Elizabeth was born. On 27 June 1835, in Sydney, Anglem joined the Grand Lodge of Freemasons of Ireland.[6] He and his wife settled at The Neck, Stewart Island in 1835, and supplied produce and beef to visiting whalers. He also piloted vessels through the strait.

An unsuccessful venture to ship bowenite (kōkōtangiwai; what they thought was pounamu) from Milford Sound (Piopiotahi) to Qing dynasty China was marred by a blasting accident which cost the Captain an eye and several fingers.[2] He passed away in November 1846. He is known to be buried somewhere at The Neck.[2][7]

It was his chart and sailing directions for Foveaux Strait that led Captain Stokes of the survey ship Acheron to rename Hananui, Stewart Island's (Rakiura's) highest peak, to Mt Anglem in his honour in 1850.[2]

Research Notes

From 1738 it was prohibited for Roman Catholics to associate with Freemasonry.[8][9]

Had at least five children. Stevens (2008) noted that the Captain may have had an association with a woman named Hutu[10] – this would seem to be a name of his son's wife, Mary Hutu Woods.
