Biography

Pvt Edwin Angelo served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: Aug 26, 1861
Mustered out: March 28, 1865
Side: USA
Regiment(s): Co. H 7th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry

Edwin's place of birth is given as Ohio on the 1860 and 1880 censuses. A Wisconsin birth record for a male child born in 1877 to Edwin (given as Edmund) and his wife Carrie gives "Edmund's" birthplace as Pennsylvania. We know that his grandfather and great-grandfather lived in Mercer and/or Crawford counties in Pennsylvania, right on the Ohio border. Carrie's parents lived in Ashtabula, Ohio, the next county west of Mercer. Edwin could have been born in either state, as we currently have no information on where his parents were living at the time of his birth. See more at William James Angelo and Jane (Hunter) Angelo.

About 1859 or 1860 Edwin went to Wisconsin with his cousin, Theodore Calvin, and appears in the 1860 Census [1] living with a young farmer and his family in Fennimore, Grant County, Wisconsin.

On Aug 26, 1861 in Boscobel, Wisconsin, Edwin enlisted in the Union Army. He served through the entire war in Company H, 7th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteers. He fought in many of the major battles of the war and was wounded twice: March 31, 1863 Edwin was reported hospitalized in Baltimore, Maryland at 'Holiday Street'[2]; at Gravelly Run, March 28, 1865, during the Appomattox Campaign leading to Lee's surrender, Edwin was wounded [3] and subsequently was listed as "absent wounded" when the regiment was mustered out. [4]

Edwin married Caroline Elizabeth (Carrie) Ford in Pennsylvania [5] about 1864. When the war ended they returned to Wisconsin.

The 1880 Census [6]shows Edwin and Carrie with their four children living in Little Grant Twp, Grant Co, Wisconsin where Edwin was a blacksmith. The children are: Florence, b. 10 Sep 1866; Harry Lee, b. 8 Dec 1869; Julia Maria, b. 23 Mar 1871; and William Wallace, b. 14 Aug 1875.

Caroline died in February, 1881 followed in March by Edwin's mother, Jane who was also living in Little Grant with her second husband, Hiram McCormick. On Dec 22, 1881 Edwin married Mary Jarret in Lancaster Wisconsin [7] and soon after moved to Canton, Lincoln County, Dakota Territory [8] where Edwin continued to work as a blacksmith.

Warren K. Angelo was born 15 Jan 1883 in Dakota Territory and a second child was buried there. In 1885 the family moved to Julesburg, Sedgwick County, Colorado, and soon afterward moved about forty-five miles southwest near Haxtun, Colorado. Edwin drilled water wells for the other ranchers and ran a blacksmith shop.[5].

Edwin died 20 Mar 1897 in Ottawa, Franklin County, Kansas, possibly at the home of his daughter, Julia (Angelo) Boardman. He is buried in Hope Cemetery, Ottawa, Franklin, Kansas.[9]
