Biography

Captain Edwin Angelo Sr. served in the United States Army Air Corps in World War II
Service started: 10 September 1940
Unit(s):
Service ended:
Edwin James Angelo was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Oklahoma on May 18, 1918 [1] when his father, Harry, was 48 and his mother, Emma, was 35. [2], He lived there with his parents and older sister, Merial [3], (except for 3 years in Wyoming -- see Harry's biography), and attended public schools in Oklahoma City.

He attended Classen High School[4] in Oklahoma City then attended the University of Oklahoma (Norman, OK) where he received his degree in 1940. During his college years he was in the ROTC and his senior year he was Captain of "Battery E", First Field Artillery.[5] In September of 1940[6], more than a year before the U.S. entered World War II, he enlisted in the Army [7] and joined the Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet. He received his flight training in San Antonio, Texas, and in 1941 he was stationed at the Army Air Forces Advanced Flying School at Craig Field, near Selma, Alabama.

While at Craig Field he met and, on 23 April 1943 married [8][9], Juanita Epp, from nearby Marion Junction. The flight training at Craig Field was in pursuit aircraft (fighters), which Ed was initially prepared for, but never deployed in that capacity. He served for a while as a Flight Instructor, then was stationed in Syracuse, N.Y., where he prepared for overseas deployment in a troop carrier squadron. During 1944-1945 he served in the Pacific Theater, including the Philippines and New Guinea.

After the war, Ed, Nita and their first child Edwin James (Jimmy) returned to Oklahoma City and soon bought a small house at 5836 NW 57th Street in the suburb of Warr Acres. Ed worked in the field of advertising and served in the Air National Guard. He was called to active duty during the Korean War, but spent the whole time as a recruiting officer, moving the family (now with 3 children) to Alexandria, LA, Memphis, TN, and Nashville, Tn. [10]

After that, he returned to Oklahoma City and formed Angelo Advertising with his sister, Merial. This time he joined the Air Force Reserve[11], and was activated briefly during the Berlin Crisis (1961). In 1964, having too much rank for any Air Reserve positions in Oklahoma, he returned to active duty and the family (now 3 children at home, one in college, and one married) moved to Travis AFB, CA.

Shortly after his retirement from the military, the family returned to Oklahoma City. Here the youngest daughters attended Northwest Classen HS and Ed was a manager for a local printing company.

He died on August 26, 1995, in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma, at the age of 77 [12][13], and was buried at Memorial Park Cemetery, Oklahoma City, on August 29, 1995.

The designation "Troop Carrier Squadron" is used by both the Air Force and Navy, and was used by the Army Air Forces in WWII (also Troop Carrier Group and Troop Carrier Wing). There was an inaccuracy in the bio, which I have repaired.

Hi

bio states he was in the army air corps, but also says prepared for deployment in a carrier squadron, which would be navy or marine corps...
