Biography

Thomas Andrews origins are unknown. His birth is estimated to be about1611. He migrated to New England in 1634, residing in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Thomas's trade was in masonry, the records show at least three occasions when he did work for the town of Dorchester that required him to use his mason skills. As a fenceviewer he was a town official who had the responsibility of inspecting new fences and settling any disputes that occurred from trespass by livestock. Thomas was also bailiff of the court in 1660.[1]

  • 1634: November 22: Thomas Andrews was granted 2 acres at Dorchester. [1]
  • 1635: December 17: He was granted 3 acres 'in lieu of a great lot.' [1]
  • 1637/8: March 18: He received 2 acres 1 quarter and 30 rods in the division of the Neck, and another land allotment of 2 acres 3 quarters and 10 rods. [1]
  • 1641: Signed a petition at Dorchester by his 'mark'. [1]
  • 1653/4: February 13: Fence viewer at Dorchester. [1]
  • 1656/7: February 9: Fence viewer at Dorchester. [1]
  • 1657: November 9: 'Goodman Andrus' was paid 8s for work at the meeting house. [1]
  • 1659/60: March 12: Again, fence viewer. [1]
  • 1660: December 3: Appointed bailiff. [1]
  • 1661: September 9: Thomas was warned 'to daub the meeting house' or take the fines. [1]
  • 1665/6: march 12: Thomas Andrews Sr. again fence viewer. [1]
  • 1668/9: March 8: Fence viewer. [1]
  • 1670: Thomas was paid 8s for work at the meeting house. [1]

Thomas wrote his will on April 6, 1667, which was proved on August 4, 1673. [1] In it he names:

  • wife Ann, the use of the whole estate until her death
  • son Thomas, the estate after his mother's decease
  • daughter Hannah Hopkins
  • children of Hannah
  • wife Ann and son Thomas named executors
  • over seers James Blake and Samuel Clap [1]

The estate inventory taken on May 20, 1673, was valued at L 181 7s 5d, with L147 10s being real estate and L1 9s 7d in mason's tools and implements. [1]

His wife was Ann (unknown), and their marriage is estimated to be c1636. [1]

Thomas died at Dorchester on May 20, 1673. [2] [1]

His widow Ann died, also in Dorchester, on January 13, 1685/5. [2] [1]

  1. Hannah born c 1636: married William Hopkins; joined the church at Roxbury. [1]
  2. Thomas baptized on June 23, 1639 at Dorchester; married Phebe Goard on December 31, 1667. [2] [1]

Andrews-12135 and Andrews-1672 appear to represent the same person because: my mistake, created duplicate. I don't understand, though, because I checked closely before I created this duplicate profile, and the search results stated that there was no profile by that name on WikiTree. Now I'm looking again, and I see there are hundreds. Some glitch somewhere.
