Biography

John Andrewartha was born in Breage, Cornwall, England.

John, the second son and fifth of nine children of John Andrewartha and Dorcas Carbes was born in 1797 and baptized on 8 March of that year at Breage, Cornwall.^[1]

Marriage and Children

John married Sarah Stephens, the daughter of William and Mary (Pearce) Stephens on 26 December 1823 at Breage, Cornwall.^[2]They had four children:

1. Julia Andrewartha (bp. 22 Aug 1824; d. April 1882, Truro, Cornwall),^[3] m. 1) James Hugo (1827-);^[4]m. 2) on 1 Jul 1872 at Truro, Cornwall, Edward Carne^[5]
2. William Andrewartha (bp. 27 Aug 1826),^[6]m. Jane (Unknown)
3. John Andrewartha [twin] (alias Andrews) (bp. 30 Nov 1828; d. 1882 Cobar, Australia),^[7] m. 5 Feb 1852 at Menheniot, Cornwall, Susannah Emma Wood (1829-1928)^[8]
4. Sarah "Sally" Andrewartha [twin] (bp. 30 Nov 1828).^[9]

In 1841, Sarah (45 years) was residing in Breage with her four children, Julia (15 years), William (15 years), Sarah and John (twins, 12 years). Sarah's occupation was 'Ag Lab' (agricultural labor), and all four children were listed as working with tin or in a tin mine.^[10]

John Andrewartha (42 years), however, was living with his mother, Dorcas (77 years) in Breage in the 1841 census and he was working as a miner.^[11]

Death and Burial

John Andrewartha died and was buried on 31 May 1850 in his 53rd year at Breage, Cornwall. ^[12]

• Autosomal DNA match (ancestry) with 4th cousin in USA, a descendant of Julia Andrew who married a Mr Hugo (this information given by the fourth cousin) and emigrated. Ancestors in common are John Andrew and Sarah Stephens.
