Biography

Birger Sjöström writes: "Mårten Andersson, born in 1789, who in 1811 took over half Åsjön, became an enterprising farmer and a father of many children. His wife Stina Cajsa Nilsdotter gave birth to 18 children of which nine died at an early age. Her firstborn son, Anders, born in 1812, was killed by smoke during a fire in 1815. It was a hard time and many of the children died of the so---called childhood diseases e.g. measles and other diseases. In other cases, church records, use the words "unknown disease" and "stomach pains". Half of the children did survive and these came to be spread out over several parishes. The family was now living in the so---called Väst I åkern (West in the field) on the south side of the lake. Here the family got to fight in difficult conditions. Some years were good but there were also difficult years. In years of crop failures distress constituted a serious threat to life itself. Åsjön was often described as "the village of trouble, hunger and lamentation". Thanks to the hard work the family managed to reasonably withstand the worst crises.

"Three of the children did stay in the village, Anders, born in 1820, married to a neighbor's daughter, Elisabet Maria (Lisa Maja) Johansdotter Strid, born in 1829. Ingrid Magdalena, born in 1835, married to the neighbor's son Johan Anton Johansson Strid and Per, born 1838, married in 1860 to the neighbor's daughter Magdalena Johanna Johansdotter Strid born 1827. Mårten's daughter Maria Charlotta (Lotta Maja), born in 1819, married in 1848 to Olof Nathanaelsson who was a resident at the nearest farm west of the village Åsjön i.e. Krokbäck.

Time passed and Mårten Andersson, born 1789, and his wife Stina Wendy, as she usually was called, continued to strive Väst i åkern. The son Anders Mårtensson, born in 1820 in Åsjön, bought a half of the homestead of his father in the fall of 1850. He had married in 1848 to his Elisabet Maria from the neighboring farm. Already before the marriage to Anders and his father had begun the construction of a new farm on the eastern side of the lake.

"There they built a new residential building, a new barn, some outhouses and finally a new baking house and an octagonal round barn. These latter two buildings were built after he and his wife moved there in 1850. This was the place that the latter owner, Johan Petter Sköld moved to. Anders Mårtensson came to be known as 'Anners-Mårtsa'."
