James died on 6 Apr 1862 in Shiloh, Hardin, Tennessee, United States aged ~20. [2] In the battle of Shiloh, the Nineteenth suffered 110 killed in action and 240 wounded of 650 men that followed its colors into the action.

A claim was filed August 22,1862 in Gadsden, Alabama by his widow, Martha M. Anderson.[3]
