James Anderson was born in 1835 in Harvey, Albert, New Brunswick, son of William Anderson (1799 - 1881) and Harriet (Bishop) Anderson (1811 - 1875).
His siblings were:

- Hannah (Anderson) Cleveland (1842 - 1879)
- Amy Elizabeth Anderson (1843 - 1882)
- Harriet (Anderson) Cleveland (1850 - 1901)
- Martha J (Anderson) Barbour (1852 - 1879)
James married Abigail Downey , daughter of Joseph Downey and Sarah Sloan Wilbur, in 1866. Their children were:
- Acenath (Anderson) Cannon (~1869 - 1928)
- Sarah Harriet (Anderson) Kennie (1870 - 1934)
- Stillman D Anderson (1872 - 1953).
James married Sarah Jane Downey , daughter of Joseph Downey and Sarah Sloan Wilbur, in 1881.
James died in 1915 aged ~80. He is buried in Waterside United Baptist Church Cemetery, Waterside, New Brunswick.
