Biography

Jens Johan (John) Andersen was born July 6, 1888 in Nors Parish, Hillerslev District, Thisted County, Denmark.[1]

A copy of the birth certificate [2] was ordered from Denmark in 1955 by Mary (Anderson) Clark and this is the transcript of the translation (subject to corrections);

John appears on the 1901 Census[3][4] with his family in Nors, then on the 1906 Census[5] he is 17 years old and working as a Laborer on the Farm of Jens Nikolaj Sørensen in Gettrup Parish.

On March 7, 1908, at the age of 19, John registered his intent to Emmigrate to New Berlin, New York, USA with the Danish Police Emmigration Service.[6] Transcript as follows;

  • Name: Andersen, Jens Johan, Occupation: Laborer, Age: 19,
  • Destination: N. Berlin, Contract No.: 69100, Registration Date: 3/7/1908,
  • Birth Place: Nors, Native Parish: ?, Last Res. Parish: ?, Last Res. County: Thisted, Last Residence: Nors,
  • Destination Country: USA, Destination City: New Berlin, Destination State: New York State

  • IDcode: I0708A2012 (I=Indirect, 07=1907, 08=1908, A=Andersen, 20=Page 20, 12=Line 12)

Then, on March 17, 1908, he left Liverpool on the S.S. Carmania[7] and was due to arrive at the Port of New York on March 25, 1908 but it appeared to be delayed and his actual arrival was on March 27, 1908. He was carrying $10 in cash and was on his way to see his friend, K. Kristensen at RSA #5 Elmer Saelve in New Berlin. The manifest described John as in good physical and mental condition with a strong complexion, Blonde hair, Blue eyes, and 5 feet 8 inches in height. The manifest also stated that John had never been in the United States before.

John traveled again in October of 1911 at the age of 23, this time with his brother, Mathias Andersen (1892-1986), (age 19), on the Empress of Ireland.[8] and arrived at the Port of Quebec City in Canada. The manifest stated that both brothers were laborers and were destined for Cedar Falls, Iowa. The manifest also stated that the religion of both brothers was Lutheran and that neither of them had been in Canada before.

The two brothers crossed the border into the USA on Oct 12, 1911.[9]

In the 1916 Census,[10] John and his brother, Mathias Andersen (1892-1986), were both listed as the head of their own individual farm households in the Cartier Municipality, in the district of Edmonton East, Alberta (existed from 1914 to 1947). The land location is given as Township 64, Range 20, W4. John's reported age was 26 and for Mathias, 25. Both reported immigration in 1912 and naturalization in 1916. The religion was Lutheran for both.

In the 1921 Census,[11] John was farming in Cartier Municipality, district of Edmonton East. His brother Matthias (Matt), and Axel Lindgren, a 22 year old lodger from Sweden who is also independently farming, were staying in the farm household. The location of John's farm was 19-64-20-W4. Matt was working as a saw setter at a nearby Mill, but the name of the Mill is hard to decipher.

John married Kate Hillyard in 1922 in Ellscott, Alberta. [12]

In 1926, John and his family are found in the Huamha Municipality, Battle River District, Alberta in the 1926 Census.[13] The Huamha Municipality is not easily identified, but an explanation is found on page 96 in the book "Rosyth Memories 1906-1965"[14] as follows;

Huamha #393 was a Municipality in the Battle River Electoral District. In 1913, A.L. Blue was elected as a Councillor, and became Reeve of the first Municipal Council of Huamha. He helped form the Municipality that took into its boundaries several Local Improvement Districts. The new Huamha Municipality took its name from Hu as in Hughenden, Am as in Amisk and Ha from Hardisty; as all these towns were in the new district. Since then it has been incorporated into the Provost Municipality and the name Huamha lost.

There is a discrepancy in the land location given in the Census, Section 20-42-9-W4, and the land location found on the Homestead Map on page 10 of the book "Rosyth Memories 1906-1965"[14], of SW-18-42-9-W4. It is believed that the Homestead Map is more accurate as another location discrepancy was found for a Mr. Wagner on the same page of the Census and same Map as well.

Memories: 1

Grandpa died when I was about 10 years old. I was in elementary school, grade 5. I have a few memories of him.

How he always had candy in his pockets, we would rush to sit on his knee and dig in his large coat pockets. We would sit there and eat the candy while he talked to my parents.

I don't think he had much money. But he brought Christmas presents one year, a Barbie board game for me that I adored.

We went to his apartment in downtown Edmonton to watch the Klondike parade from his window. I remember seeing the big "Page Cleaners" sign down the street, we had a great view of all the floats and people. The building Grandpa lived in is still standing, an unusual wedge shaped high rise in the downtown area close to the river valley called The Gibson Block.

It has since been renovated. It wasn't in great shape when he lived there. He had pets he told us. He would make them come out. Then he said he would turn out the light, we would hear a big bang and then the lights would come back on and we would see his pets. So we waited, we heard the bang and then the light came on and there on the wall were his cockroach buddies who lived behind the big dresser in his room! He was living there when he died. I remember my Mom telling me they found a journal that Grandpa kept. In it he had recorded a couple of small heart attacks that had happened before he died. Mom said he never told her about his heart condition.

I remember his funeral, there were quite a few people there. It was cold that day, late fall in Edmonton. We held the reception at our home. Funny what I remember as a kid, it was the first time I had A&W's fried chicken. I know I was sad to lose him, but hadn't really known him either. Most of what I know was from the few bits of information told by my Mom.
