On 20 October 1909, when Axel was 19 years old, he arrived in the United States on the ship "Hellig Olav" at Ellis Island, New York. He was single, reported that he had been living in Copenhagen, and provided his mother Marie Andersen as a contact.[4] Based on the 1910 United States Federal Census, he found housing as a boarder on North Franklin Street, Hempstead, NY. He was still single and reported that he was an engineer in the Power House industry. Note this is the first record found with his last name spelled as Anderson.[5]
On the 18th of May 1913, Axel O Anderson married Catherine Shevlin in Manhattan, New York.[6]
Axel's World War I Draft Registration Card was signed on 5 June 1917 in Nassau, New York. It provides the following information: He was living at 134 Jackson St, Hempstead; it confirms his birth as 29 Dec 1889 in Copenhagen, Denmark; he had been naturalized as a citizen by this point; he was employed as the chief engineer at the Cathedral Corporation in Garden City, New York. Also, he had a wife two children. He had no prior military experience. He reported his appearance as tall, medium build, dark eyes and light hair. [7]
In the 1920 census Axel (age 30), Chief Engineer, was the married head of household with two children in Garden City, Nassau, New York. Also, his 23 year old brother Emil was living with them. [8]
In the 1925 census Axel (age 35) was the head of household in Hempstead, Nassau. His family had grown to five children, the youngest being twins Dorothea and Elinor who were just 17 days old. The household also had two lodgers.[9]
Axel died on 21 March 1929 in Hempstead, New York, United States.[10]
Axel was buried in Greenfield Cemetery, Uniondale, Nassau County, New York, United States, gravestone inscription: Anderson -- Axel Oliver -- 1889 - 1929.[11]
