Biography

Samuel was born in 1821. He married Sarah Roxcina Babcock and had a large family with her. He was a Major in the Civil War, as was Sarah's brother, Major Nathan Stanton Babcock. Both survived the war.

Samuel's Find a Grave Memorial indicates he was Senior Major of the Seventh New York Heavy Artillery Regiment. He was part of the Army of the Potomac, and fought in the battles of the Wilderness under General Grant, at Cold Harbor, and at Seven Pines. His personal profile on Family Search indicates he was wounded during the conflict at Petersburg, and additionally, that after the war he represented the Federal Government in occupied Richmond as a federal agent and pension agent.

He resided south of Richmond in a place called High Meadow. He held elective public office , was active in the Republican ranks and the Reconstruction process, assisted his daughter in opening a school for black children, had a son who was a forger, had his silver-ware stolen, had a friend who was thrown from his buggy, was charged for assaulting Gilbert C. Vincent over something printed in the paper, and was the subject of some political infighting regarding his federal assignment. All of this is from the news clips at the "Chronicling America" site.

Later he lived many years in Chicago, Illinois, and worked in real estate. Eventually, the family lived at 442 Wellington Avenue.

1900 US Census at Chicago:

Samuel Anable 78
Sarah R Anable 13
William Anable 53
Sarah A Anable 47
Courtland W Anable 42
Ella Tollackson 37

Samuel passed away in 1913 at the age 91 and is noted as buried in Chicago's Graceland Cemetery and buried in New Jersey with the rest of the family. Perhaps the grave was relocated.

Note: Find a Grave also suggests that Samuel Low Anable was a direct descendant of Roger Williams, founder of the colony of Rhode Island, connecting via his parents Joseph Anable of Connecticut and Alma Sheldon of Massachusetts.
