Espen Amundsen became Major General of the Royal Norwegian Air Force in 2005. He graduated from the Norwegian Naval Academy, Bergen in 1979 and earned a Master of Science from U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey in 1987. He served as ADC to His Majesty the King of Norway 1988-91. He retired in 2013, and later worked as a consultant and board member.
Espen Amundsen was born at Telemark County Hospital (fylkessykehus) where his father worked as a doctor, June 20th 1954 and he lived at Solum (Skien) until the middle of September 1954. The family moved to Farsund for a year. Then they moved to Tromsø where his sisters Bente and Gro were born. They lived there for four and a half year. He lived in Arendal 1959-1962 and there he started at school (Stinta Primary School). The family moved to Oslo in 1962 and he attended Ullevål Primary School. In 1965 they moved to Bergen. His brother Terje was born in Bergen. Espen attended Haukeland Primary School, as his mother did. The family moved to Blæstad, Vang, Hedmark in 1968. He attended Ener Junior High School (The last half of the seventh grade and the eight grade). In 1969 he was confirmed in Vang church, and during the summer they moved to Hamar. He attended Børstad Junior High School (ungdomsskole) and he graduated (Examen Artium) from Hamar High School (katedralskole) in 1973.
Espen Amundsen entered the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF) during Summer 1973 and attended Luftforsvarets befals- og administrasjonsskole, the logistic class in 1973-1974 for NCO-training. After graduating he became sergeant and worked at Forsvarskommando Nord-Norge/Stasjonsavdeling Skjerstad (HQ Defence Command Northern Norway/Radar-site Skjerstad) with supply/logistics in 1974-1975. He took a one year economic course (Studentfagkurs) at Ajer High School (videregående skole), Hamar 1975-1976.
Han reentered the RNoAF as a cadet at The Norwegian Naval Academy (Sjøkrigsskolen), Finance, logistics and administration (Intendanturlinjen) in 1976 and graduated in 1979.

Education: One year study (grunnfag) in Public Administration and Organizations, University of Bergen,1983. One year study (grunnfag) in Public Law, the University of Oslo, 1985. Master of Science 1987. The Norwegian Staff and Command College, Staff Course I and II (Stabsskole), 1986 and 1992 respectively, and Senior Course (Forsvaret høgskole, Sjefskurset), 1996.
Espen Amundsen has worked as a Management and Public Affairs consultant since 2013. He was member of the Board, The Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (Forsvarets forskningsinstitutt) 2016-2018, and deputy chairman the last year, and member of the Board, The Eckbo Foundation since 2018.
He moved to Jessheim in 1981 and has lived in Oslo from 1985, first in Sverdrups gate (Education in the USA 1986-87) and at Nordseter in Oslo from 1989.
