Biography

Birth

Nothing is known of the ancestry of Americus Ames. Based on his death record, he was born in Maine about 1825. An Ancestry.com profile says that he was a son of Jonathan Phelps Ames and [[Griffith-5465}Mary "Polly" (Griffith) Ames]], but it cites as evidence only a FindAGrave memorial and a census mortality index record, neither of which confirm the relationship.[1]

Marriage

Americus Ames married Sarah Lyford Haskell.[2] On 28 Oct 1847, Americus Ames of Canton, Maine, and Sarah L. Haskell of Livermore, Maine, published at Livermore their intention to marry.[3]

Children

Americus and Sarah (Haskell) Ames had three known children. The births of the first two were entered in the vital records of Livermore, Maine, by the town clerk in February 1855.[4] Eddie is known only from his gravestone at the Wyman Cemetery in Livermore.[5]

Death

The 1860 Cenus Mortality Index says that Americus Ames, shoemaker, born in Maine, died of typhoid fever at Winthrop, Maine, in August 1859,[6] at the age of 34. A gravestone at the Wyman Cemetery in Livermore, Maine, says that he died on 20 Aug 1859.[5]
