James Wawn Ambler was born in 1893 at or about Armadale in the Colony of Victoria. He was the the son of Raphael Ambler and Mary Ann Watson. [1]
James enlisted in the AIF in WW1. Regimental number: 29912. Rank on enlistment was Gunner in the Howitzer Brigade 120. This unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A60 Aeneas on 3 October 1916. From The Australian War Memorial Nominal Roll we see he later served with the 5th Field Artillery Brigade.
He was unfortunately Killed in Action 5 September 1917, and is buried in the Ypres Reservoir Cemetery (Plot I, Row D, Grave No. 73), Belgium. [2]
