Biography
The daughter of Emmett Alverson and Amanda (Hunter) Alverson, Ethel Alverson was born in Marengo Township, Iowa[citation needed] in 1879, residing there with her family.[1][2][3] In 1900, residing at home in Marengo Township with her parents, Ethel worked as a school teacher.[4] By 1910, Ethel had moved with her parents to Spokane, Washington, residing with her widowed maternal grandmother, Martha Hunter, and working as a stenographer.[5]
After the death of her father in 1918, Ethel and her mother lived together in Spokane[6] where, in 1920, Ethel worked as a bookkeeper. Nothing is known of Ethel in 1930; that year, her mother lived with Ethel's sister, Elizabeth, residing in Spokane, and Ethel most likely had already moved to California. By 1940, Ethel's mother had joined her in California, residing together in Long Beach, where Ethel's mother was listed as the head of their household.[7] That year, Ethel was 60 and her mother was 85 and neither listed an occupation on the 1940 federal census--Ethel had applied for Social Security Administration benefits in 1939.[8] Ethel's mother passed away in 1948 and in 1950, Ethel lived alone in Long Beach, California.[9]
Ethel Alverson passed away in Los Angeles County, California[10] at the age of 77.
