Memorial by Cotton Mather

The Life of Mr. JOHN ALLIN, from Cotton Mather's Magnalia Christi Americana.[1]

John Allin was born in the Year 1596. He passed his courses and became a "faithful Preacher of Christ."

"It is an ancient observation, that there were three things done by the Holy Spirit of God, on and for the Prophets, which were employ'd in Publick Service for him: One was to give them Courage against the Rage of Adversaries. Another was, to give them Wisdom, for to regulate their Conduct. A third was, to give them Vertue and Holiness, that their own Consciences might not sting them, when they were to bestow Aculeate[8] Rebukes upon the Vices of other Men....With all of these Excellencies, did ... God, ... adorn our Allin."'[1]

Because of the persecution of Puritans in England, John Allin traveled to and settled in the American Wilderness. When the church of Dedham, was gathered in 1638, John became the pastor, which he continued at until after a 10 day "easy" sickness, he died 26 Aug 1671.

His accomplishments were considerable, yet he was humble, and sweet tempered and adds this as his epitaph quoted from Phillippus Gallus:

Vir Sincerus, Amans pacis, patiensque Laborum,
Perspicuus, Simplex, Doctrinae purus Amator.
An upright man, lover of peace, patient laborer, insightful, simple, a lover of pure doctrine.

Research notes

From Great Migration Directory: Allin, John: Saxlingham-juxta-Mare, Norfolk; 1637; Dedham [DeTR 1:32; DeChR 5; MBCR 1:374; NEHGR 41:68-69; ODNB; TAG 67:29]. (This John Allin was not son of Reginald Allin of Colby, Norfolk, and was not minister at St. Mary Quay, Ipswich, Suffolk.)

Ordained at Petersbourough on 6 Aug 1620. attended Christ's College at Cambridge; received his BA at Cambridge on 12 August 1616

The church at Dedham, Massachusetts, was gathered the eighth day of the ninth month 1638. (8 Nov 1638). But in 1636, with only about 30 families, they had begun to meet to discuss and decide the manner and form of their church. John Allin was a leading man in this group. "After nearly two years trial of the gifts and graces of each person in the church, John Allin was selected as the leading church officer." On the 24th day of the 2nd month 1639 (24 April 1639) "John Hunting with the two brethren, laid hands on his head, and pronounced the words of ordination." "Mr. Allin's church continued in great harmony all his life time..."[9]

Disputed Parentage. John Allin of Dedham, is in some sources identified as the son of Reginald Allin of Colby[10] baptized 22 May 1597.[10] at St. Giles Church, Colby, Norfolk, England, Johannes Allin, [11] College: Admitted Caius College 27 April 1612, age 16, son of Reginald Allin of Colby.[10] Received Bachelors degree 1615, and Masters degree in 1619.[2] According to the Great Migration Directory (Anderson, 2015): "This John Allin was not son of Reginald Allin of Colby, Norfolk, and was not minister at St. Mary Quay, Ipswich, Suffolk."

Needs disputed parentage added and the text edited.
Removed doubtful parents, based on request and note below. Further research on parentage would help.

yes, research would be helpful Sandy. Will you please do it? My hands are full.
Regarding father here attached: Reginald Allen -

Please see GMD p. 6 where it says that REginald Allen of Colby was not the father. Thank you.

Consider, please, Reginald detached. Another profile created or found - Unknown Allin - to keep sibling relationship with Elizabeth Allen-7973. I haven't researched to discover if Richard Allen is an actual sibling.

Can an Unknown Allin be created as father to connect John with his sister Elizabeth Allen-7973?
posted by M Cole
Hi M. If Elizabeth is a sourced sibling, I ( for one) would surely think it good to create an unknown father so the siblings can be connected. Of course, check first to see if there is already a profile, as is usual procedure.
May we please add PGM Adjunct with PPP. (I shudder just thinking about an early, English "Unknown Allin"... )
