Biography

The son of David Allen (1786-1835) and Elizabeth Ackley (1789-1865), Josiah Allen was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania[1] in 1818. His siblings included:

  1. John Breintnall Ackley Allen (1811-1880)
  2. Mary White Allen (1811-1880)
  3. Samuel Allen (1815-1889)
  4. Sarah J. Allen (1815-1835)
  5. Mercy Ann Allen (1816-1880)
  6. Thomas Ackley Allen (1823-1825)
  7. David Allen (1825-)
  8. Elizabeth Ackley (Allen) Pinchin (1826-1852)

Josiah married Elizabeth (Furman) Allen, the daughter of Thomas Furman and Susannah Ellis, marrying in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 23, 1843[2] and having four known children together:

  1. Emily Allen (1845-1936)
  2. William N. Allen (1848-1932)
  3. Norwood Penrose Allen (1851-1903)

They made their home in Philadelphia, residing in Walnut Ward, residing in 1850 in the Philadelphia home of widow Hannah Allison, while Josiah worked as a merchant.[3] By 1860, Josiah had established his own household in Philadelphia, residing there with his family in a household that included his widowed mother, a nephew, and two servants.[4] Josiah had prospered as a merchant and the value of his personal estate was valued, in 1860, at $20,000. By 1870, Josiah worked as a oil dealer, and a prosperous one--he by then owned real estate valued at $112,000 and a personal estate valued at $25,000.[5] His household that year included his three children; his son, William, at the age of 21, worked as a civil engineer and his son, Penrose, at the age of 19, worked in a store as a clerk. Josiah's household also included Mary B. Ellis, likely a relative of his wife, and two domestic servants.

Josiah Allen died of apoplexy[6] at the age of 54, passing away, as the attending physician certified, in Long Beach, New Jersey.[7] He last lived at 2014 Wallace Street in Philadelphia. Josiah is buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[8][9]
