Charles was baptised in Gilmorton, Leicestershire, England on 23 March 1817. He was the son of Thomas and Alice Allen ^[1].

In the 1841 census Charles (age 25) was in Hill Street, Shearsby, Leicestershire ^[2].

In the 1851 census Charles (age 34), framewWork knitter, was the married head of household on Lower Grove Street, St Margaret, Leicester, Leicestershire ^[3]. His wife Sophia had been born in Blaby, Leicestershire in 1809.

In the 1861 census Charles (age 45), Framework Knitter, was the married head of household in Leicester St Margaret ^[4]. With them is daughter, Elizabeth Brown (20) ^[5]
