William Allen (1770-1842) was an English scientist and philanthropist who opposed slavery and engaged in schemes of social and penal improvement in early 19th-century England.[1]
He was born 29th August 1770 on the old artillery ground, Spitalfields, Middlesex, England, the eldest son of a Quaker silk manufacturer.[2] As a young man, he became interested in science and started a chemical business, specializing in pharmaceuticals. He later became the first president of The Royal Pharmaceutical Society. He was also an ardent abolitionist and pacifist, and engaged in a range of philanthropic works.[1]
His first marriage was on 13th October 1796 at Tottenham to Mary Hamilton, daughter of Edward Hamilton and Jane.[3][4] She died due to complications in childbirth.[1] They had one daughter, Mary, born in Plough Court, Lombard Street, London on 6 September 1797.[5][6]
He married, second, on 22nd April 1806 at Houndsditch to Charlotte Hanbury, daughter of Capel Hanbury and Mary.[7] She died ten years later, while they were travelling on the Continent.[1] They had no children.[8]
He married, third, on 14th March 1827 at Hammersmith to Grizell Birkbeck, daughter of Samuel Hoare and Grizell.[9] Grizell was a wealthy widow who, at 72, was 15 years his senior.[1] They too had no children..[8]
After his third wife's death in 1835, he travelled extensively and spent time with Quaker evangelists, including Elizabeth Fry. He died on 30 December 1843 and was buried in Stoke Newington, London.[1]
