Military Service

From Dec 1814 to Jan 1815, 2nd Div 12th & 13th Regs Louisiana Militia.

Contrary to popular belief the 12th & 13th did not participate in the Battle of New Orleans .

"In 1814 the British launched their campaign on the Gulf Coast and John, his brother Nathaniel and brother-in-law John Stephenson, all enlisted to fight. They served during 1814-1815, fighting in the Battle of New Orleans."

In 1836 it appears John just missed the siege of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto

"When Santa Anna laid siege to the Alamo, Capt Benjamin F Harper immediately raised a company of 28 men at Beaumont, TX, including John Benjamin Allen. At Liberty, Harper's Company was merged with Capt William M Logan's Company and they set out for San Antonio, but did not arrive before the Alamo fell. After the fall of the Alamo, Samuel Houston took control of the remaining Texas Army and retreated eastward with Santa Anna in pursuit, which became known as the 'Running Scrape'. Capt George W Hargraves with 21 men, including John and one other Allen, marched to join Houston at San Jacinto but did not arrive until after the surrender of Gen Santa Anna."[2][3]

Republic of Texas issued land grants of one league of land to each adult male who was in Texas prior to 1836. John qualified for a land grant as a Zavala Colonist as he arrived in Texas prior to 1836. His grant is in what is now Orange County.
