John Allen was born in Staunton, Augusta, VA, on May 17, 1796. He was the son of James Allen Jr. and Elizabeth McClung Tate.
At the age of 19, John Allen married Mary Polly Crawford on November 2, 1815, in Staunton when she was 17 years old. They had two children. Mary reached 21 years of age and died on May 6, 1819.
At the age of 25, John Allen married Ann Isabella (Barry) McCue, the widow of William McCue, on June 7, 1821, in Augusta County, Virginia, when she was 24 years old. They had one daughter.
John Allen was responsible for co-founding Ann Arbor, Michigan, when he and his partner, Elisha Rumsey, purchased 640 acres of land in February 1824. Soon thereafter, John's parents, together with his brother, James T. Allen, and sister, Sarah B. Allen, and his second wife, Ann Barry Allen and his three children (two with his first wife, one with Ann), travelled from Virginia to the new settlement at Ann Arbor.[1][2]
He died in San Francisco, California, on March 11, 1851, at the age of 54.
John was buried in San Francisco, San Francisco, CA, on March 11, 1851. There is also a memorial to the family located in Ann Arbor.
