Thomas Allen was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to New South Wales
Thomas Allen was about 35 years old when he was tried in Limerick City on 22 June 1822 and found guilty of the crime of "idle and disorderly".[1] He was imprisoned in Cork City and received a sentence of seven years transportation.[2] The Irish Court Records noted (in a petition dated 9 April 1823) that he and 23 others (also convicted of idleness and disorder) "were convicted by the Limerick Court under the Insurrection Act for being absent from their homes". Allen was apparently accused of being a "Whiteboy".
Thomas obtained his certificate of freedom on 4 November 1829. His trade was "labourer". Thomas was five feet eight inches tall with a ruddy complexion, brown hair and blue eyes. He had previously held a ticket of leave (dated 10 May 1828) stating that he was required to remain in the district of Bringelly[3] but this was surrendered when he obtained his certificate of freedom. Somewhat curiously, this 1829 certificate was later replaced (again surrendered) for a new one, this second certificate being dated 3 February 1835. No explanation was given on the record.[4]
