Ellen Allen was about 21 years old when she was tried in Longford on 8 April 1852 and found guilty of larceny (stealing an apron and handkerchief, provenance unknown, at Longord)[1]. She received a sentence of seven years transportation[2]. Ellen was incarcerated in Grangegorham Female Prison in Dublin before her journey to Australia[3]. Ellen travelled to Van Diemen's Land on board the Midlothian arriving there on 24 February 1853.
Ellen's conduct record revealed that she had been convicted before of minor theft as well as vagrancy. Her gaol report was "very quiet" while the surgeon's report on board ship was "good". Ellen was unmarried, could not read or write and was a Catholic. She brought a 8 month old baby with her called Thomas and stated that the child's father was "Thomas Cann" or "Thomas McCann"[4] The indent record also recorded that Ellen had aunts (or at least female next of kin) called Sarah and Kitty back in County Louth.
Ellen was just over five feet tall with a fresh complexion, dark brown hair, hazel eyes and large nose and mouth. She had also lost a front tooth. Her trade was "servant".[1].
Ellen's conduct record is fairly unremarkable. It appears she spent most of her time as a convict working as a servant.
In 1854 Ellen married Edward Hull. She obtained her ticket of leave in October 1854 but this was later revoked in 1855 as she was absent from a muster. Ancestry member public trees indicate that her son Thomas died in a prison nursery around this time. No source record has been found to support this yet but it could explain why Ellen missed the muster. Ellen's conduct records end at this point.[1].
Ancestry member trees also suggest that Edward and Ellen had two more daughters, Sarah and Elizabeth. The daughter Sarah appears in a marriage record where Ellen and Edward are given as the parents. Sarah's first marriage gave her a surname of Cook. She married a William Davey 24 Nov 1897 in New Norfolk[5]
Court proceedings in 1889 against Ellen for Arson[6] and her daughter Sarah for child neglect suggests that she is the Ellen Hull who married George Fry in 24 Jan 1882 in Hobart[7] although she seems to have lied about her age, giving a birthdate of 1841 rather than 1831.
