Colonel John Allen, the son of James Allen, the Irish immigrant, was born in the Colony of Virginia, in 1771. The place of his birth is in present day, Rockbridge County, which was established in October, 1777 from parts of now neighboring Augusta and Botetourt counties, and the first county elections were held in May 1778. Rockbridge County was named for Natural Bridge, a notable landmark in the southern portion of the county.
John's father moved his family, first to Lincoln County, Kentucky. About the year 1784, John's father bought a large tract of land near the present town of Bloomfield, Nelson county, Kentucky, and built a cabin. He returned to Lincoln county to bring his wife and children to the new cabin, but when he returned he found it in ashes. Indians had burned it and the neighboring fort near which it was built. James Allen built another home, which was eventually owned by a great-grandson, also named James Allen.
On October 20, 1798, in Shelby county, Kentucky, John married Jane Logan, born September 26, 1779, the daughter of General Benjamin Logan. [1]
John was a lawyer, by profession, and was a Representative of Shelby County, in the Kentucky State Legistature. In 1807, he was elected to the Kentucky Senate from Franklin county. In 1811, he commanded as Colonel the First Kentucky Rifelmen, the first regiment raised in that state to fight the British. His military career was short, for he fell mortally wounded at the battle of River Raisin on January 22, 1813.
Allen County, Indiana is named for him.[2]
